The AAT Level 2 Accounting training course will prepare you for entry-level accounting job roles by building up your knowledge of financial administration. You will learn essential skills such as double-entry bookkeeping, basic costing principles, costings, and how to use accounting software.

AAT Level 2 in Accounting leads onto the AAT Advanced Diploma in Accounting Level 3 and AAT Professional Diploma in Accounting Level 4 qualifications.

Is the AAT Level 2 in Accounting Foundation Certificate course suitable for me?

While it would be beneficial to have a basic understanding of Accounting, gained through previous study or office-based experience, anyone can enrol on the AAT Accounting Level 2 training course.

You will be required to:  

  •    Be at least 16 years old (or have the consent of a parent or guardian)
  •    Have a solid understanding of the English language
  •    Be comfortable with basic mathematics
  •    Have access to a PC or Laptop (This course is both Mac and Windows compatible, however the Sage software is not compatible with Apple Mac’s, unless Boot Camp is installed)

While this qualification is delivered online, we also include the textbooks to assist you with your studies. 

What jobs can I apply for after my AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting training?

Additional pathways include progressing onto our AAT Advanced Diploma in Accounting Level 3. With this qualification, you can apply for more senior accounting jobs, and gain AATQB status, making you a qualified Bookkeeper. You will be able to use the initials AATQB after your name and have the ability to legally run your own Bookkeeping business.

General Accounting Responsibilities & Salary

As an Accountant you will be responsible for many different areas of a company’s finances, including: 

  •    Preparing financial documents (bills and invoices).
  •    Completing purchase orders.
  •    Managing payroll.
  •    Completing bank reconciliations, and more.

While salaries range by sector and job role, industry averages are between £20,000 and £24,000 a year at this level.   

AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting Syllabus

AAT Level 2 Accounting training will provide you with a basic knowledge of accounting principles and skills. At this level, your knowledge in accounting will start to develop and finance administration is your focus.    

The five units you'll cover through this course, are:

  • Unit 1 - Bookkeeping Transactions
  • Unit 2 - Bookkeeping Controls
  • Unit 3 - Elements of Costing
  • Unit 4 - Using Accounting Software
  • Unit 5 – The Synoptic Assessment  

Average course completion time – 6-9 months

These qualifications will teach you how to process payments and receipts, prepare invoices, complete bank reconciliations, use accounting software and have the skills required to work effectively in the finance industry.  

The national average pass rate for AAT Level 2 is 85.0%. Our pass rate is 91.2%.  

Exam Prep Sessions - To help students have the best chances of passing their exams, we have developed a series of regular exam preparation sessions. Before the session, students complete a pre-assigned mock paper in advanced, and your tutor will run through the paper and correct answers, informing you of what the AAT expect you to write and why. This helps you think in a way that will enable you to approach each question correctly, increasing the likelihood of you passing.

AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting Exam Details

There are five exams in total - 4 computer-based exams and 1 Synoptic Assessment. 

Exams

  •    Bookkeeping Transactions (1 Hour 30 minutes).
  •    Bookkeeping Controls (1 Hour 30 minutes).
  •    Elements of Costing (1 Hour 30 minutes).
  •    Using Accounting Software (2 Hours).
  •    Foundation Certificate in Accounting Synoptic Test Assessment (2 Hours).

When you are ready to take your assessments, you have two options:

Online Assessments directly with e-Careers - To take your assessment from the comfort of your home, please contact e-Careers Customer Service to book and pay for your assessment. 

Test Centre Assessments - You can still choose to sit your exam at a suitable AAT approved assessment venue. We can help find the closest one to you. Exam fees vary from centre to centre.

Exam fees are not included in the course cost. 

Synoptic Assessments 

Synoptic Assessments are designed to test your understanding of a range of subjects across your AAT qualification. You can take this test for most weeks of the year.

AAT Exams Update - COVID-19

Pearson VUE-owned test centres will be following the recommendations from the CDC and World Health Organization for preventing the spread of COVID-19 and protecting testing candidates and their staff. Candidates are asked to comply with the health and safety guidelines outlined below to keep fellow candidates safe. (Face masks are now required while testing at Pearson VUE-owned test centres). Synoptic window dates have now been confirmed for the remainder of the year and include additional dates to help with planning and potential capacity issues due to social distancing restrictions. Full details can be found here.

Level 2 synoptic assessments

In agreement with Ofqual, the UK qualifications regulator, the AAT has announced the intention to issue calculated results for eligible students studying the Foundation Certificate in Accounting - Level 2 (Level 5 in Scotland) and Foundation Diploma in Accounting and Business (Level 2).

Sage software is only compatible with a Windows PC or Laptop. This software is not compatible with Apple Mac’s (unless Boot Camp is installed).
