Is the AAT Level 2 in Accounting Foundation Certificate right for me?

While it would be beneficial to have a basic understanding of accounting (either through previous study or office-based experience), the AAT Accounting level 2 course is open to everyone. That said, due to the nature of this course we recommend that students:

  •    Are at least 16 years old (or have the consent of a parent or guardian)
  •    Have a solid understanding of the English language
  •    Are comfortable with basic mathematics
  •    Have access to a PC or Laptop
    (This course is both Mac and Windows compatible, however the Sage software is not compatible with Apple Mac’s, unless Boot Camp is installed).

No matter what your preferred learning style is, this course will suit you. While our certifications are delivered online, we also include the physical study books within the price, to assist you with your studies (and save you £400!).

What are the AAT Level 2 in Accounting Foundation Certificate online course modules?

The AAT Accounting Level 2 Foundation Certificate will provide you with a basic knowledge of accounting principles and skills. At this level finance administration is your main focus, with your knowledge in accounting starting to develop. 

The five modules you'll cover through this course, are: 

Bookkeeping Transactions

  •    Learn how to reconcile a supplier’s statement, review double-entry processes, the cashbook, discounted transactions and payment records.

Bookkeeping Controls

  •    Feel confident preparing control accounts and using journals, better understand the banking system, manage petty cash, cash books and control accounts.

Elements of Costing 

  •    Understand how to use spreadsheets to budget effectively and calculate product costs. Gain experience with manufacturing accounts, product coding and costing for inventories, as well as looking at labour costing.

Using Accounting Software

  •    Start to form the required skills to process transactions professionally, using Sage 50 computerised accounting software, establish how to set up a company effectively, manage ledgers, enter sales and purchase transactions, and get to grips with payments and banking receipts.

Work Effectively in Finance

  •    Explore what it takes to become an effectively member of the accounting team, learn to complete accounting and payroll functions, and gain an understanding of professional ethics. You will also work on essential business skills, which include personal development and managing your workload.

Foundation Certificate Synoptic Assessment

  •    The synoptic assessment will ask students to apply knowledge and skills gained across the qualification in an integrated way, within a workplace context. Scenarios will change over time to ensure the validity of the assessment.

AAT Level 2 in Accounting Foundation Certificate exams

There are four computer-based exams and one Synoptic assessment:  

AAT - Level 2 Certificate in Accounting Exams: 

  •    Bookkeeping Transactions
  •    Bookkeeping Controls
  •    Elements of Costing 
  •    Foundation Certificate in Accounting Synoptic Test Assessment
  •    Using Accounting Software

The exams will need to be taken at your local AAT test centre and the format includes multiple choice questions. Don’t worry, we’ll give you all the information and support you need to book your exams, when you’re ready. If you need any more information on the AAT exams, get in touch with one of our advisors.

Exam fees are not included in the course cost and will be approximately £60-85 per exam and will vary by exam centre.

The AAT require all students to join as a student member but don’t worry, the membership fee is something we have included with our courses! Just be sure to register as a student member within 14 days of your course start date please. This registration allows you to sit any necessary exams and take advantage of the support and resources available.
