AAT Levels 2 and 3 are two recognised qualifications in accounting that build your skills from the ground up. Level 2 focuses on core principles like double-entry bookkeeping, costing, and finance administration. Level 3 takes it further, covering financial statements, tax processes, and management accounting techniques. They provide a complete route into professional finance roles and further study.
AAT Level 2 is equivalent to GCSE grades 4–9 (A*–C) in England and Wales, and SCQF Level 6 in Scotland.
No. AAT Level 3 is a professional qualification equivalent to A Level standard. It's designed to prepare you for financial roles and is a stepping stone to higher-level qualifications like AAT Level 4 or chartered routes such as ACCA or CIMA. It's also one of the most cost-effective alternative career progression opportunities to a traditional university degree, offering a practical, career-focused route into accounting.
Yes. AAT Level 3 prepares you for various finance roles, including Bookkeeper, Accounts Assistant, Tax Assistant, Payable and Expenses Supervisor, Payroll Supervisor, and Finance Officer.
Choose AAT if you're looking for a strong foundation in accounting. It's ideal for beginners and builds the core skills needed for finance roles. ACCA is suited to those ready for more advanced, in-depth knowledge and aiming for chartered accountant status. Most learners start with AAT and then use their qualifications and experience to move on to ACCA or another chartered route like CIMA or ACA.
It's not recommended unless you already have solid accounting experience or previous qualifications. Most learners start with Levels 2 or 3, with those new to this industry or without double-entry bookkeeping knowledge or experience starting at AAT Level 2.
Yes. While AAT exams are typically taken at approved test centres, some can be sat at home through remote invigilation.
It depends on which unit you find least comfortable. Some learners may find financial forecasting challenging, while others struggle with tax or financial reporting. Your experience, confidence with numbers, and study habits will all influence which unit feels most demanding.
