AAT Accounting Frequently Asked Questions

What is the AAT Level 2 and 3 programme?

AAT Levels 2 and 3 are two highly respected qualifications in accounting that build your skills from the ground up. Level 2 focuses on core principles like double-entry bookkeeping, costing, and finance administration. Level 3 takes it further, covering financial statements, tax processes, and management accounting techniques. They provide a complete route into professional finance roles and further study.

What is Level 2 AAT equivalent to?

The AAT Level 2 Certificate is equivalent to GCSE's grades 4–9 (A*–C) in England and Wales, and SCQF Level 6 in Scotland.

Is AAT Level 3 a degree?

No. AAT Level 3 is a professional qualification equivalent to A Levels. It's designed to prepare you for financial roles and is a stepping stone to the higher-level AAT Level 4.

Can I get a job with AAT Level 3?

Yes. AAT Level 3 prepares you for various finance roles, including Bookkeeper, Accounts Assistant, Trainee Accountant, Tax Assistant, Payable and Expenses Supervisor, Payroll Supervisor, and Finance Officer, Credit Control officer plus many more accounting roles. You'll also be able to set up your own practice after completing AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting.

Should I do AAT or ACCA?

Choose AAT if you're looking for a strong foundation in accounting. It's ideal for beginners and builds the core skills needed for finance roles. ACCA is the equivalent to post graduate and studied after the AAT. Most learners start with AAT, the employer's preference and then use their qualifications and experience to move on to ACCA or another chartered route like CIMA or ACA.

Can I go straight to AAT Level 4?

No you cannot unless you have a full accountancy degree. Accountancy is a subject that builds from the foundation up into one overall picture. It is not possible to miss any elements that build the overall picture.

Can I sit AAT exams at home?

Yes. You can sit your exams at home through remote invigilation or at your local assessment centre. It's entirely down to your your preference.
