She completed AAT Levels 2, 3, and 4 as a day-release student while gaining valuable experience in accounting practice, where she worked for 14 years. Her teaching career started with delivering Sage training before progressing to AAT. Karen has since completed an assessor's qualification, a CertEd teaching qualification, and all ACCA exams — an impressive achievement while balancing work and life as a single parent. Her experience also includes serving as Vice Chair for an awarding organisation and Chair of Audit and Finance.

Can I become an Accountant with AAT?

Yes! you become an AAT Accountant. Earning the AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting qualifies individuals for higher-level finance roles and can facilitate a fast track to becoming a Chartered Accountant by allowing exemptions from certain modules in advanced qualifications like ACCA or CIMA. Becoming AAT qualified can lead to senior level positions.

Employers highly value AAT qualifications, which can lead to roles as Financial Accountants, Management Accountants, and Tax Managers. Entry level roles such as Accounts Assistant and Bookkeeper often offer salaries around £25,000 to £33,000 per year.

How many courses are offered in the AAT qualifications?

AAT professional qualifications accredited by the Association of Accounting Technician professional body, offer accountancy skills and relevant knowledge at each level including bookkeeping principles, bookkeeping controls principles. The skills offered will enhance your job prospects in the accountancy sector or raise the skills of existing accounting staff

There are two pathways; the accounting route including AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting, AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting, and AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting. The second pathway are the two Bookkeeping Short Courses, which are, AAT Level 2 Certificate in Bookkeeping and AAT Level 3 Certificate in Bookkeeping.

All courses teach you essential accounting skills and a better understanding of the overall business environment. There are no prior qualifications required to enter AAT Level 2, just a good command of maths, written and spoken English.

There is also a Level 1 Access course, which is a precursor of the fill accounting or bookkeeping programmes. You receive the AAT Level 1 for free when you enrol on any AAT Level 2 qualification with e-Careers.

The AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting is the final and most advanced stage, teaching skills such as budget preparation and drafting financial statements. On completion of level 4, you become a qualified AAT Accountant and can apply for the designatory letter MAAT after you name.

How long does an AAT accounting qualification take?

It depends on the level and your study pace: there is a range of AAT qualifications, including the Level 2 Certificate in Accounting, Level 3 Diploma in Accounting, Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting, plus two Bookkeeping Short Courses. Level 2 builds essential skills, including double entry bookkeeping, basic costing, and an understanding of purchase, sales, and general ledgers.

  • AAT Level 2: Average completion time of 6–9 months
  • AAT Level 3: Average completion time of 9–12 months
  • AAT Level 4: Average completion time of 12–15 months

Can I study the AAT qualifications through an apprenticeship?

Yes you can. You will need to be employed to study through an apprenticeship. It is the employers choice whether they want you to study as an apprentice or be commercially sponsored.

How much does an AAT course cost?
