The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) is the UK's leading professional body and accounting qualification. It is internationally recognised and studied in over 100 countries around the world.
Being internationally recognised, means you can study and become AAT qualified in the UK then follow a career anywhere in the world.
AAT accounting qualifications span four levels: Level 1 (Access), Level 2 (Foundation Certificate), Level 3 (Advanced Diploma), and Level 4 (Professional Diploma). These accounting qualifications are recognised by employers worldwide, because they trust AAT's hands-on, work-based approach to building job-ready accounting skills and practical knowledge.
There are two pathways to studying AAT qualification; the AAT Bookkeeping qualifications and the AAT Accounting qualifications. Both finance qualifications offer excellent career opportunities in professional accounting.
The AAT offers Bookkeeping qualification at both Level 2 and Level 3. These courses are suitable for entry into the finance industry and are also ideal courses for becoming a self-employed bookkeeper. Longer-term, there are more progression opportunities studying the Accountancy route over studying the Bookkeeping route.
The AAT courses are popular accounting qualification because they meet the needs of all people wanting to work in an accounting role from those starting out with no experience to those with managerial and strategic finance experience. Plus learners can progress at their own pace.

The AAT Level 1 Access Course is given free at Gold Edge Training when you enrol on to the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting
The AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting is for those starting their careers in accountancy.
There are no entry requirements to start at Level 2 except a good command of Maths and both written and spoken English. It builds foundational knowledge and usually takes 6–12 months to complete. Level 2 prepares learners for entry level roles such as accounts assistant or bookkeeping work. The AAT Level 2 certificate in accounting is ideal for:
The AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting is perfect for individuals who have developed broader accounting skills for job roles such as assistant accountant, payroll assistant or tax assistant. The level 3 will ideally suit:
The AAT Level 4 Diploma in Professional Accounting is the final level and ideal for those with more senior qualifications and experience, covering advanced skills in drafting financial statements, management operational and strategic accountancy. Typically the qualification takes 12–18 months to complete and will lead to roles like financial accountant or senior finance officer. To study the Level 4 students must meet one of the following criteria:
Each level of the AAT qualification is mapped to RQF (Regulated Qualification Framework) making it easier to understand the different professional accounting and finance skill levels. AAT Level 2 is the equivalent to GCSE’s, AAT Level 3 is equivalent to A-Levels and Level 4 is equivalent to the first year of a degree.
In the workplace however, the AAT is not seen as a comparison to the academic qualifications above. It is seen as being higher because of its high demand. For instance, an employer would employ a Level 4 AAT Accountant over a person with a university degree in accounting because of the practical, real world skills of AAT over the theoretical academic knowledge of a degree.
This structured pathway supports career progression across different job roles in the finance profession. AAT qualification holders contribute effectively in roles including employed and self-employed bookkeepers, accounts supervisor, financial accounting technicians, financial analysts, and management accountants.
When deciding on what qualification is best for you, always be led by what the employer wants and not what outdated tradition may suggest. After all, it is the employer who will be offering you the employment.
There are many benefits to studying the AAT qualifications and courses.
There are 4 exams at Level 2, four exams at Level 3 and five exams at Level 4. This may seem a lot when looked at overall, but it isn’t. Look at each level individually because each level will be a milestone in your career.
Together, the exams will support your career journey into a wide range of accounting and financial roles.
The Level 2 Certificate in Accounting exams are:
These exams build a solid understanding of fundamental accounting principles, financial transactions, and accounting software used in junior roles such as trainee accountant and Credit Control assistant.
The Level 3 Diploma in Accounting exams are:

Choose 2 of 5 options:
The professional recognition of Level 4 can support progression into senior roles, including commercial analyst and Tax Manager, as part of a wider accounting qualifications pathways.
